Lincroft should follow redesign of Times Square Recently, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that several blocks in the Times Square area were going to be closed off to vehicular traffic to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. In Elizabeth, Route 82 had recently undergone a redesign to transform the roadway from a treacherous industrial corridor to a safer, more aesthetically pleasing thoroughfare that serves both motorists and pedestrians. In Lincroft, the Newman Springs Road Route 520 corridor — particularly between Brookdale College and the Garden State Parkway — is a heavily traveled, often precarious thoroughfare that would benefit from such a redesign. The benefit to residents, business owners and students would be incalculable as it would make the roadway safer while encouraging pedestrian use of the area. This would not only increase the patronage of local businesses and foster community spirit, but cut down on traffic, congestion and pollution in the area as well. I would hope that the Monmouth County freeholders would consider such a proposal and the potential benefits it holds for Lincroft. Steve Massell Middletown |
