      Thank goodness for school boards
            Few people question the need for their local planning board or their town council. Yet some people believe school boards somehow represent an archaic form of government - - that they don't matter and might even be expendable. Heaven forbid!

      Drivers urged to be considerate of wildlife
            Driving home from the store the weekend of Feb. 21, my husband and I saw what we thought was a dead squirrel in the road. And then the poor thing lifted its head. This is not the first time I've found injured animals that have been hit by cars but were not killed. As spring approaches the numbers are sure to increase.

      Thanks go out to support system during Aberdeen fire
            To all the firemen, first-aiders and police from the local departments and neighboring towns who assisted at the Feb. 21 fire in Aberdeen, words cannot adequately express our appreciation for all your help in keeping our home from being involved. It was a bad situation with the intensity of the flames, the wind and the closeness of the homes.

      Hook personnel still clueless despite new superintendent
            As a result of my visit to the Feb. 20 National Park Service (NPS) meeting held at the Fort Hancock Chapel concerning a proposed ferry dock at Fort Hancock, I feel compelled to relate to all concerned citizens that the Sandy Hook Unit of the National Park Service still remains clueless, despite the installation of new superintendent, Mr. Arvin.

      Good Samaritan law needs to be improved
            On March 8, 2008, I had a heart attack while picking up my youngest daughter from Girl Scouts. While I was unconscious and not breathing on the side of the road, calls were placed to 911, but no one initially attempted CPR. I was lucky, however. A good Samaritan — a teenager certified in CPR — stopped and literally kept me alive until the paramedics came.
