Margaret C. Blum
Mrs. Blum, 68, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown died May 31 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, she resided there prior to moving to Port Monmouth in 1976. She was a retired supply clerk at Riverview Medical Center, where she was employed 10 years. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Francis Blum; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Anthony Mercantante of the Belford section of Middletown; a son, Francis Blum Jr. of Jersey City; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Timothy Dugan of Lyndhurst, and John and Mary Ann Dugan of Rutherford; two sister, Betty Dugan of Bayonne, and Patricia Stafford of Rutherford; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be June 3 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral gathering will be June 4 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral liturgy at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, Middletown. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Elizabeth Winifred Farkas Mrs. Farkas, 80, of Holmdel died May 27 in Holmdel. Born in London, she resided there and Worthing, England, prior to moving to the United States in 1946. She was the retired owner and operator of Elizabeth Farkas Interiors, which she opened in 1962. She was a founding member of Temple Beth El, Closter. She was a member of Zonta Professional Women’s Organization. She enjoyed time with her family, and animals. She is survived by a daughter, Celia Farkas Nawrocky of Atlantic Highlands; a son, James Farkas of Nyack, N.Y.; a sister, Joan Hampton of Worthing, England; a daughter-in-law, Miriam Goderich; and two grandchildren. Marie Mienert Mrs. Mienert, 89, of Matawan died May 2 at Madison Center, Matawan. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Manasquan Park for more than 45 years before moving to Matawan. Mrs. Mienert was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred E. Mienert, in 1976. Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn Edmonds of California and Barbara Tuttle of Old Bridge; and three grandchildren. A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church of Matawan. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in the Morganville section of Marlboro before moving to Middletown 40 years ago. Mrs. Federico was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, Lincroft, where she was a member and past officer of the St. Ann’s Guild. She was a member of the sewing and knitting club at Luftman Towers, Lincroft. Mrs. Federico was predeceased by her husband, Joseph S. Federico, in 1990; and a brother, Salvador Placanica. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Donna Federico of Middletown; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Mary Federico of Eatontown, Catherine and Roger Kramp of Madison, Roberta and George Pappayliou of Springboro, Ohio, Frieda and Bruce Huff of Hillsborough, and Denise and John McKenzie of Eatontown; two sisters, Loretta Panaro and Francis Capozzi, both of Fulton, Ky.; and six grandchildren. McDermott Mr. McDermott, 74, of Hazlet died May 30 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. He had been a resident of Hazlet for the past 39 years. Mr. McDermott was a public service operator at Bayshore Regional Sewage Authority, Union Beach, where he was employed for 19 years before retiring. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg, where he also volunteered for several years. Mr. McDermott was a founder and coach at the Hazlet Youth Athletic Basketball League, where the Mac’s Fun Ball league is named for him. He was predeceased by two brothers, Cornelius and Charles McDermott; and three sisters, Helen, Catherine and Nancy. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Klyberg McDermott; three sons, John McDermott of Middletown, Michael McDermott of the Belford section of Middletown, and Joseph McDermott of Parlin; three daughters; Karen Varno of Belford, Maureen Miller of Hazlet, and Ann Marie Berges of Belford; a sister, Theresa McDermott of Hazlet, 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Morrell Mrs. Morrell, 91, of Holmdel, died May 21 in Holmdel. Born in the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, she had lived in Matawan for 60 years before moving to Holmdel. She was a teacher for the Matawan School District for 40 years before her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Matawan; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Keyport; and Club 60, Matawan. Mrs. Morrell was predeceased by her husband, James Morrell, in 1991. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George and Yve Morrell of Duluth, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Morrell Ojamaa and Ty Ojamaa of Keyport; a brother and sister-in-law, Watson and Ginny Stillwaggon of Eatontown; five grandchildren; and one nephew. Born in Newark, he resided there prior to moving to Keansburg eight years ago. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Helen Oswin of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown; three sisters, Harriet Underwood of Keansburg, Irene Svenson of Hazlet, and Loretta Oswin of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Boston, he resided in Jersey City for 25 years, as well as the Cliffwood Beach section of Hazlet, Marlboro and Freehold, prior to moving to Las Vegas. He was a truck driver at Teamsters Local, Newark. He was predeceased by his wife, Angelica Lamont, in 2000. He is survived by two sons, David Earl of Hollywood, Fla., and Billy Earl of Freehold; a daughter, Ann Marie Szeles of Keansburg; a brother, Jeffrey Earl of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Maureen Kugleman of Carteret, and Marilyn Orsini of Long Island, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. Miller Mr. Miller, 59, of Roslindale, Mass., and formerly Middletown, died May 17 at New England Medical Center, Boston. Born in Winchester, Mass., he resided in Middletown and the West Keansburg section of Hazlet prior to moving to Roslindale. He was a chef at Milk Street Cafe, Boston. Prior to that, he was employed at United Electric Controls, Watertown, Mass., for 25 years. He served with the U.S. Air Force, and was a past president of the West Keansburg Fire Company. He enjoyed playing golf. He was predeceased by his wife, Judith Annette Nelson Miller. He is survived by three daughters, Lori Miller of East Boston, Nicole Miller of Miami, and Belinda Jeffrey of Livermore, Calif.; two sisters, Lee Lower of Essex, Mass., and Leslie Handler of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; two brothers, John Miller of Ramsey, and William Miller of San Diego, Calif.; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Stein Mr. Stein, 73, of Englishtown, died May 20 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Born in Cheesequake, he had resided in Matawan before moving to Englishtown 12 years ago. Prior to retiring, he had worked as a heavy equipment operator for Hess Construction Co., Parlin. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, Matawan. He was also a member of Operating Engineers Local 825 for more than 45 years, as well as a member of the Mallard Gun Club, Englishtown. Mr. Stein was predeceased in 1999 by a daughter, Wendy Maynard. Surviving are his wife, Alta Rae Gaub Stein; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jacquelyn and Chuck Carpenter of Jackson and Lyn Stein of North Scituate, R.I.; a brother; five sisters; and a granddaughter. She was a retired electronics worker at Lavoy Laboratories, Morganville. She was a communicant and member of the Rosary Society at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Walsh, in 1993. She is survived by two sons, Robert J. Walsh of Indian Head, Md.; and Edward F. Walsh; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Marie "Claire" Gavini Fairchild Mrs. Fairchild, 82, of the West Keansburg section of Hazlet, died May 21 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Newark, she resided in West Keansburg for more than 25 years. She was a retired store manager at Thrift Bakers, where she was a longtime employee. Mrs. Fairchild was a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 194 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179 Ladies Auxiliary, Port Monmouth section of Middletown. She was also a member of the Senior Center Association of Keansburg, Bayshore Center of Holmdel, and Cullen Center Senior Citizens Club, Hazlet. Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Arnold Gavini of West Keansburg, and William and Gale Gavini of Harrison; a daughter, Karen Gavini of Long Branch; a brother, Joseph Fairchild of North Haledon; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was an employee of the Fabric Tree, retiring in 1983. Prior to that, she worked at Cloth World, Middletown, and Progressive Life Insurance Co., Red Bank. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Red Bank. Mrs. Salmon is survived by her husband of 45 years, Walter J. Salmon; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Lori Salmon of the Belford section of Middletown; a daughter and son-in-law, Deana and Charles Citro of Manalapan; a brother, Robert M. She was a retired supply department employee at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, New York City. She was a communicant of Most Holy Redeemer Church, Old Bridge. She was a member of the Cheesequake Village Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Cinque; three sisters, Assunta Riccio, Angelina Del Prete and Concetta Scarpitto; and a brother, Anthony Cassano. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Staten Island, N.Y., before moving to Aberdeen 30 years ago. Mr. Fitzgibbons was a manager at NYNEX, New York City, for 35 years, retiring in 1994. He was a parishioner of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. He was a member of the Matawan Volunteer Fire Company and the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mr. Fitzgibbons is survived by his wife, Patricia Fitzgibbons; a son and daughter-in-law, John J. and Cynthia Fitzgibbons III of Nixa, Mo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Mark Chrzanowski of Matawan; a brother, Thomas Fitzgibbons of Middletown; two sisters, Maureen Becker and Susan Reed, both of Staten Island; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was a retired truck driver at Sea Board Freight Lines, where he was employed 10 years. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was predeceased by four brothers, Robert, Raymond, August and James Miner. He is survived by three sisters, Eleanor Schultz and Louise Miner of Port Monmouth, and Grace Gallagher of Highlands; two sons, Michael Miner of Virginia, and Raymond Miner of California; and several nieces and nephews.
